About this course
The Sirah is not read as ancient history in the Islamic tradition — it is read as a model for living. Contemporary Muslims and scholars return to it to address questions of personal character, social ethics, leadership, conflict, and faith under pressure. Understanding how the Sirah functions as a living guide — and how different readings of it lead to different conclusions — is the task of this course.
By the end of this course you will be able to describe how contemporary Muslim scholars and educators apply Sirah narratives to contemporary ethical and social questions, analyze the methodological debates about which aspects of the prophetic model are intended as universal guidance and which are specific to historical context, examine how the Sirah is used in contemporary Muslim identity formation and community leadership, and evaluate scholarly accounts of how the prophetic biography shapes contemporary Islamic discourse.
What you will learn:
- The question of the binding nature of prophetic example: how Muslim scholars distinguish between the Prophet's actions as Messenger, as judge, as political leader, and as individual — and why this distinction matters for contemporary application
- How the Sirah is used in contemporary khutbas (Friday sermons): analyzing how specific narratives are selected, framed, and applied to present concerns in Muslim communities
- Case study: how the Prophet's example in conflict and reconciliation is applied in contemporary scholarship on peacebuilding and interfaith dialogue
- The Prophet as ethical model: how Muslim scholars apply his example of honesty, humility, mercy, and justice to professional and civic life in contemporary secular societies
- The Sirah and women: how different contemporary Muslim scholars read the prophetic example with respect to women's roles — analyzing both the sources and the methodological disagreements
- How the Sirah is used in Muslim countercultural movements: both reformist and conservative — examining the selective use of prophetic biography in contemporary Islamic discourse
- Academic scholarship on the Prophet: how Western historians engage with the Sirah sources and how contemporary Muslim scholars respond to and sometimes engage with that scholarship
- A structured reflection exercise: how a specific contemporary challenge might be approached through a disciplined engagement with the Sirah tradition
The course draws on contemporary Islamic scholarly writing, selected Sirah texts in translation, and academic religious studies. Reflection prompts are designed for serious engagement rather than surface summary. A synthesis worksheet guides you through applying the Sirah's guidance to a specific contemporary question using multiple layers of analysis. This course is educational in nature and does not constitute a fatwa or religious instruction.
This course is designed for learners with some background in the Sirah or Islamic studies who want to engage with its contemporary applications. It is also suitable for students of ethics, Islamic political thought, or religious studies. No prior Arabic knowledge is assumed.
