Practical Sculpture Work: Clay Modeling, Carving, Casting, and Assemblage
Walk through the practical workflows of clay modeling, carving in wood or stone, casting, and assemblage, with focus on planning, execution, and finishing.
About this course
Each sculptural material asks for its own workflow, tools, and habits. Clay supports careful additive building, carving rewards patience and respect for the grain or stone, casting opens reproducibility and new forms, and assemblage uses found materials in deeply intentional ways. This course walks through the workflows of each so you can choose materials with intention.
You will work through written exercises that mirror how a thoughtful sculptor would plan and execute work in each material tradition. The emphasis is on building judgment about which workflow suits which idea.
What you'll learn:
- Plan and execute clay modeling work including armature design, building, refinement, and firing or preservation
- Approach carving in wood or stone with respect for grain, structural integrity, and tool selection
- Design and execute casting work including mold making, material choice, and finishing
- Build assemblage work that uses found and constructed elements with clear conceptual intention
- Apply finishing techniques appropriate to each material including patination, sealing, and presentation
- Plan studio workflow including ventilation, dust control, and tool maintenance for each material
The course progresses from clay modeling through carving, casting, assemblage, finishing, and studio workflow. A capstone written exercise asks you to plan a complete sculpture in a material of your choice, including studies, workflow, and finishing.
This course is designed for beginners with some art exposure and intermediate sculptors who want a structured way to think about material choice. No specific material is required. The course treats sculpture as a craft you can develop through structured practice and respects the long arc of mastering any material tradition.
