Aging in Place: Designing a Home and Support System for the Long Run
Apply long-term planning to make aging in place safe, sustainable, and connected, with home modifications, support networks, and contingency plans.
About this course
Most older adults want to stay in their own home. Done thoughtfully, aging in place can offer good outcomes for many years. Done without planning, it leads to falls, isolation, and crisis-driven moves. This applied course teaches you to design aging in place as a long-term plan rather than a default.
By the end of this course you will be able to assess a home for current and future safety, design modifications staged by need, build a support network around your parent, plan for the predictable transitions that come with aging, and recognize the signs that aging in place is no longer viable.
What you will learn:
- How to run a room-by-room home safety assessment covering bathrooms, stairs, lighting, and entry points
- How to stage home modifications from low-cost basics to larger renovations as needs change
- How to build a support network including home health, neighbors, faith communities, and adult day programs
- How to integrate technology including medical alerts, monitoring, and simple remote check-ins respectfully
- How to plan for predictable transitions such as driving cessation, increased care, and cognitive change
- How to develop a written contingency plan for a fall, hospitalization, or sudden decline
- How to recognize the signs that aging in place has stopped working and a higher level of care is needed
The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: a home safety assessment, a modification roadmap, a support network map, a technology plan, a transition plan, and a contingency document.
This course is written for adult children and other family supporting a parent who intends to age in place. By the end you will move from hoping it works to running a clear plan that supports your parent's independence as long as it is safe and recognizes the signs that it is time to plan differently.
