Foundations of Tween Puberty and Body Image

The early stages of puberty often begin in the tween years and bring questions about body, identity, and image. Sound parenting rests on understanding the early changes and the principles of supporting positive body image. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the early stages of puberty, recognize the role of body image at this age, identify the principles of supportive conversation, and understand when concerns warrant medical or mental health consultation. What you will learn: - The early stages of puberty and the wide variation in timing - The role of body image at this age including media and peer influence - The principles of supportive conversation including respect for privacy - The role of hygiene and self-care during early puberty - The role of family food and body culture - The role of school and pediatric care in supporting this stage - The signs that suggest medical or mental health consultation The course uses readings, developmental summaries, case examples, and reflection prompts.
