About this course
Knowing that combination feeding is possible is not the same as knowing how to do it without inadvertently reducing your milk supply, how to introduce a bottle so your baby accepts it, or how to build a schedule that fits both feeding modes into your day. This workbook provides the structured tools to set up a combination feeding routine that works for your specific situation.
By the end of this course you will be able to design a daily feeding and pumping schedule that maintains supply while incorporating formula feeds, use a feeding and output log to track whether your baby is getting adequate intake, introduce a bottle using a paced feeding approach, and adjust your combination feeding plan as your baby grows and your circumstances change.
What you will learn:
- Feeding and pumping schedule template: mapping breastfeeding sessions, formula supplements, and pumping replacement sessions across a 24-hour period
- Daily intake and output tracking log: wet diapers, dirty diapers, and approximate intake to assess adequacy
- Bottle introduction guide: timing, flow rate selection, and paced feeding technique to minimize bottle preference
- Supply maintenance after a missed feeding: when and how to pump as a replacement, and for how long
- Formula preparation checklist: powder-to-water ratios, safe water sources, preparation hygiene, and storage time limits
- Transitioning from primarily breastfeeding to more formula: how to drop sessions gradually and what to expect in terms of engorgement and supply adjustment
- Signs that your combination feeding plan needs adjustment: excessive fussiness, poor weight gain, severe engorgement, or clogged ducts
- Return-to-work combination feeding plan template: designing a pumping and formula schedule for the workday
Each module presents a worked scenario — a parent establishing combination feeding in the newborn period due to supplementation need, and a parent designing a return-to-work schedule at 12 weeks — with annotated templates. You apply the templates to your own feeding situation using the reflection prompts after each module. The workbook ends with a one-page combination feeding plan you complete for your current stage.
This course is designed for individuals who are currently breastfeeding and supplementing with formula, or who plan to establish combination feeding from the outset. Suitable for those who are new to combination feeding. No prior lactation knowledge is required. This course is informational and educational; for personalized support, consult a licensed lactation consultant or your infant's healthcare provider.
