About this course
Basic communication skills take you through the early stages of a non-monogamous arrangement. But as relationships become more complex — when partners' partners enter the picture, when agreements need renegotiating, when old patterns resurface under new pressures, when a non-monogamous network grows or contracts — a more sophisticated and adaptive communication practice is required. This applied course examines that higher-level practice.
By the end of this course you will be able to facilitate a renegotiation conversation when an existing agreement is no longer working, navigate communication in metamour (partner's partner) relationships with clarity and care, manage communication breakdowns in multi-partner networks, and adapt your communication approach as your relationship structure evolves over time.
What you will learn:
- Renegotiation communication: how to raise the need to change an existing agreement, conduct the conversation productively, and document the new understanding
- Metamour communication: the specific dynamics of communicating with your partners' other partners — expectations, role clarification, and the range of relationship models from kitchen table to parallel
- Communication in hierarchical versus non-hierarchical structures: how to communicate primary/secondary distinctions or avoid them, depending on your relationship model
- Managing communication breakdowns in a non-monogamous network: how to repair communication failures when multiple people are affected
- Long-term relationship evolution and communication: how to adapt communication practices as partners' individual identities, needs, and external circumstances change
- Communication under stress: how jealousy, insecurity, and external pressures affect communication quality in multi-partner relationships, and strategies for maintaining standards under difficult conditions
- Boundaries versus rules revisited: how to communicate personal limits in ways that invite respect without creating controlling dynamics
- Building a communication culture across a non-monogamous network: shared language, norms, and practices that support everyone involved
This course is structured around the complex, long-term communication challenges that arise in established non-monogamous relationships. Case narratives illustrate each scenario, and analytical frameworks provide tools for navigating them. Reflective exercises and self-assessments help you identify the communication challenges most relevant to your own current situation.
This course is designed for individuals with experience in non-monogamous relationships who have developed basic communication skills and want to address more complex scenarios and long-term practice. Suitable for those navigating established multi-partner networks. No specific prior coursework is required, but familiarity with basic NVC concepts is helpful.
