Foundations of Ritual and Ceremony Design: Theory, Symbolism, and Structure

Rituals mark what matters. From a child's first birthday to a graduation to a funeral, the ceremonies humans create around threshold moments serve functions that casual conversation cannot: they make transitions visible, they gather community, they embed meaning in action and object. But what actually makes a ritual effective? This course addresses that question through the lens of ritual theory, comparative cultural study, and structural analysis. By the end of this course you will be able to explain the major theoretical frameworks for understanding ritual, identify the structural elements that recur across effective ceremonies in different traditions, analyze existing rituals for their symbolic logic, and apply these principles to the design of new or modified ceremonies.
