Ritual, Worship, and Lived Religion: Applied Perspectives Across Cultures

Understanding how worship functions today — within diaspora communities, across interfaith marriages, inside institutions navigating modernity — requires moving beyond historical description toward sustained analytical engagement. By the end of this course you will be able to analyze how liturgical and ritual traditions adapt under conditions of migration and cultural change, examine tensions between institutional orthodoxy and personal adaptation in worship, apply concepts from lived religion scholarship to specific case studies, and assess how ritual practice intersects with gender, class, and political power in contemporary settings. Reflection prompts invite you to apply each framework to contexts you know firsthand or have studied previously. A final integrative worksheet guides you through analyzing a single ritual tradition across its historical, social, and contemporary dimensions.
