About this course
The life of the Prophet Muhammad is, for Muslims, the living embodiment of Quranic guidance — a model (uswa hasana) that encompasses personal character, spiritual depth, social ethics, and political leadership. For scholars of religion and history, it is also a document of the emergence of one of the world's great religious traditions. The Sirah tradition — the genre of prophetic biography — is the primary medium through which this life has been transmitted, studied, and applied across fourteen centuries.
By the end of this course you will be able to describe the major phases and key events of the Prophet Muhammad's life using the principal Sirah sources, distinguish between the Meccan and Medinan periods and their different character, explain the major narrative events of the Sirah — the first revelation, the migration (Hijra), the establishment of the Muslim community in Medina, and the conquest of Mecca — and discuss how the Sirah tradition has functioned in Islamic scholarship and devotion.
What you will learn:
- Pre-Islamic Arabia and the context of the Prophet's birth: the social, religious, and political environment of the Hijaz in the late sixth century
- The Meccan period: the first revelation, the early community, the nature of the opposition, and the social and spiritual character of the message
- The Hijra: its circumstances, its religious significance, and its function as year one of the Islamic calendar
- The Medinan period: the formation of the Muslim community as a political entity, the Constitution of Medina, the battles of Badr, Uhud, and the Trench
- The conquest of Mecca and the final years of the Prophet's life: what the sources describe and what the events signify theologically
- The major Sirah sources: Ibn Ishaq's Sira Rasul Allah (as preserved by Ibn Hisham), al-Waqidi, and later comprehensive biographical works — their methods and limitations
- The Shamail: accounts of the Prophet's character, personal conduct, and appearance — their function in Islamic piety
- How the Sirah is taught and used today: in religious education, in Friday sermons, in popular devotional literature, and in academic scholarship
The course proceeds through a chronological sequence of the Prophet's life with analytical framing at each stage. Primary source excerpts in translation are included. Reflection prompts ask you to engage with the relationship between historical account and theological significance. A comparative note contrasts Sirah methodology with historical biography in other traditions.
This course is designed for learners with no prior background in Islamic studies or Islamic history. It presents the Sirah as both a religious tradition and a subject of scholarly study. No prior knowledge is assumed. All key Arabic terms are provided with transliteration and definition.
