Chaplaincy Skills in Practice: Presence, Assessment, and Spiritual Care Documentation

Conceptual knowledge of chaplaincy is not enough — effective spiritual care is a practiced skill. Presence, the ability to listen without imposing, the capacity to identify a care seeker's spiritual framework and needs, and the discipline of documenting care in clinical or institutional language: these are competencies built through guided practice and structured reflection. This course provides exactly that scaffolding. By the end of this course you will be able to conduct a structured spiritual care assessment using an established framework, document a chaplaincy visit in language appropriate to a medical or institutional record, demonstrate through written case analysis the practice of non-directive, presence-centered care, and identify when to refer to other professionals including mental health clinicians, social workers, or community clergy. What you will learn: - The FICA and HOPE frameworks for spiritual history and assessment - How to write a clinical chaplaincy note: SOAP format adapted for spiritual care - Active listening and the discipline of presence: responding to distress without agenda - Religious and spiritual needs assessment in acute medical settings - Working with patients or residents at end of life: goals, language, and family dynamics - Cross-cultural and interfaith care: adjusting your approach when your tradition differs from the care seeker's - Self-care and secondary trauma prevention for chaplains in high-acuity settings - Ethical edge cases: involuntary settings, children, and those who decline spiritual care The course is organized around eight case scenarios drawn from hospital, prison, and military settings. For each scenario, a detailed case narrative is provided along with a structured reflection worksheet, assessment template, and documentation exercise. After completing your independent response, you review a worked example that models the competencies being developed. Between cases, short readings provide the conceptual background needed to work with unfamiliar situations. This course is educational and does not substitute for supervised clinical pastoral education (CPE) units or accredited chaplaincy training, which remains the appropriate pathway to professional credentialing. This course is written for student chaplains, divinity students undertaking field education, volunteers in spiritual care programs, and clergy seeking to formalize practical skills. It is suitable for those new to institutional contexts. No clinical background is required, though some experience in pastoral or spiritual care settings will help you engage the case material more fully.
