Leather is one of the most demanding and rewarding of craft materials: strong but flexible, capable of precise tooling and elegant surface treatment, and long-lasting when properly worked and cared for. This course provides that foundation. By the end of this course you will be able to distinguish the major leather types (full-grain, top-grain, genuine, and bonded) and explain why those distinctions matter for craft applications, identify the major tanning methods and describe how they affect leather properties, name and correctly use the core hand tools of leatherworking, and explain the structural and design principles that underlie durable, well-proportioned leather goods. Each unit provides explanatory readings, annotated diagrams showing tool use and construction details, and case examples illustrating how material and construction choices determine the quality and longevity of the finished piece. This course is educational; actual leatherworking requires hands-on practice with appropriate tools and supervision when first learning tool use to ensure safe technique.
