About this course
Standard recover work is only the beginning. The most rewarding and financially sustainable upholstery careers involve work that general handymen cannot replicate: authentic period restoration using traditional materials, custom work on complex architectural furniture, and the ability to advise clients on fabric durability and design compatibility. These skills take years to accumulate through trial and error — unless you have a clear framework to guide your development.
By the end of this course you will be able to apply traditional stuffing techniques appropriate to nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century furniture, work with specialty materials including ticking, horsehair, and coil-on-coil spring systems, navigate client consultations for custom and restoration projects, and manage a small upholstery workshop efficiently.
What you will learn:
- Traditional stuffing methods: first stuffing with stitched edges, second stuffing, and top stuffing with natural materials
- Antique spring systems: distinguishing and replicating original coil configurations in period pieces
- Working with specialty fabrics: cut velvet, chenille, leather, and outdoor performance textiles
- Curved and irregular forms: how to work with tight radii, barrel backs, and sculptural contemporary designs
- Fabric sourcing and specification: communicating with textile suppliers, understanding minimum orders
- Client consultation workflow: scope assessment, written estimates, project agreements, and managing expectations
- Workshop efficiency: layout, tool maintenance, material storage, and project throughput
- Building a portfolio and reputation in residential, commercial, and museum-quality restoration markets
This course is built around extended case studies: an authentic 1890s parlor chair restored using period-correct double-stuffed construction, a mid-century sectional recovered in a performance fabric for a hospitality client, and a modern curved sofa requiring pattern matching across complex seams. Each case includes annotated worksheets, supplier specification templates, and client communication samples. Reflection prompts ask you to analyze trade-offs between historical authenticity and practical durability.
This course is designed for working upholsterers and advanced hobbyists who have completed foundational and hands-on training and are ready to tackle complex projects and professional practice. Prior experience with basic recover work is assumed. This course is educational; museum-quality and historically sensitive restoration work benefits from specialist mentorship and, in some institutional contexts, conservation credentials.
