About this course

Body piercing looks simple from the outside. In practice, it demands precise anatomical knowledge, sterile technique, sound judgment about when not to pierce, and the client communication skills to set up good healing outcomes. Piercers who skip this foundation cause preventable complications and face serious professional and legal consequences. By the end of this course you will be able to identify the anatomical structures relevant to common piercing placements, explain the stages of wound healing as they apply to piercings, describe the aseptic technique required for safe procedure execution, and articulate the criteria for refusing a piercing on safety grounds. What you will learn: - Relevant anatomy: skin layers, cartilage, major vessels, nerve distributions, and how each affects placement - Wound healing biology: the three phases of healing and what disrupts each phase in piercing context - Jewelry materials: implant-grade titanium, surgical steel, niobium, PTFE — properties, biocompatibility, and labeling verification - Jewelry types: labret posts, captive rings, curved barbells, dermal anchors — functions and anatomical suitability - Aseptic technique: handwashing, glove use, sterile field maintenance, and single-use needle protocols - Common placements: lobe, helix, nostril, septum, navel, eyebrow, nipple, oral — placement conventions and contraindications - Contraindications: anatomical limitations, skin conditions, health considerations, and informed refusal - Regulatory environment: health codes, bloodborne pathogen certification requirements, and piercing licensure The course uses readings, anatomical diagrams, and case study scenarios in which you evaluate fictional client consultation situations and identify correct and incorrect piercing decisions. Self-assessment exercises reinforce placement and contraindication knowledge. This course is designed for aspiring professional piercers and tattoo studio staff who want a rigorous conceptual foundation. No prior body modification experience is required. This course is educational; supervised hands-on training under a qualified professional and applicable bloodborne pathogen certification and licensure are required before piercing clients, as mandated by local health regulations.
