Foundations of Forklift Operation and Warehouse Safety
Build the knowledge framework behind safe forklift operation — covering vehicle types, load physics, OSHA standards, and the operator certification process before hands-on training.
About this course
Forklifts are among the most dangerous pieces of equipment in industrial and warehouse environments, accounting for thousands of serious workplace injuries each year. Most accidents are predictable — they follow from specific knowledge gaps about load stability, pedestrian zones, surface conditions, and operating limits. A systematic knowledge foundation is the first line of injury prevention.
By the end of this course you will be able to describe the major forklift categories and their applications, explain the physics of load stability and the capacity plate, identify the OSHA standards governing powered industrial truck operation, and outline the components of a compliant operator evaluation and certification process.
What you will learn:
- Forklift categories: counterbalance, reach trucks, order pickers, pallet jacks, and rough-terrain forklifts — applications and limitations
- Load capacity and stability triangle: how load weight, load center, and mast tilt interact to affect tip-over risk
- Reading the capacity plate: interpreting attachment coefficients, load center specifications, and maximum lift height
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178: the powered industrial truck standard — operator training requirements, inspection, and refueling
- Pre-operation inspection: the daily checklist for fluid levels, forks, mast, tires, and safety devices
- Pedestrian safety zones: OSHA requirements for traffic separation, speed limits, and warning devices
- Fueling and battery charging: propane, LPG, and electric battery handling — safety procedures for each
- Operator certification structure: the OSHA-required evaluation components and employer certification documentation
The course uses readings, capacity plate worked examples, and scenario-based self-assessment exercises that ask you to evaluate described operating situations for safety compliance. No equipment access is required for the conceptual material.
This course is designed for new warehouse workers, logistics staff, and supervisors who want a rigorous knowledge foundation before or alongside formal operator training. No prior forklift experience is required. This course is educational; OSHA requires that forklift operators be evaluated and certified by a qualified trainer on the specific equipment types used in their workplace, and actual operation must be performed under qualified supervision until certification is complete.
