About this course
A portfolio that was well-constructed at one stage of life may become misaligned as income, time horizon, and risk capacity evolve. And even a well-designed portfolio can be undermined by behavioral errors — panic selling, performance chasing, or neglecting to rebalance — that accumulate quietly over years. Long-term portfolio management is as much about maintaining discipline as about initial construction.
By the end of this course you will be able to adjust a portfolio's allocation framework as time horizon and financial circumstances change, identify and mitigate the most common behavioral biases that erode long-term returns, evaluate portfolio performance against an appropriate benchmark over multiple time periods, and develop a plan for transitioning an accumulation-stage portfolio toward a distribution-stage structure.
What you will learn:
- Life-stage portfolio evolution: how allocation should change from early accumulation through pre-retirement
- Behavioral biases in portfolio management: disposition effect, recency bias, and overconfidence and their practical consequences
- Performance evaluation: time-weighted return, attribution analysis, and choosing an appropriate benchmark
- Managing concentration risk from employer stock, sector overweights, or legacy positions
- Tax-loss harvesting as an ongoing portfolio management tool: timing, wash-sale rules, and efficiency
- Transitioning to distribution: reducing equity concentration, building a cash buffer, and sequencing withdrawals
- Portfolio documentation: maintaining a decision log, reviewing your investment policy statement annually
- When to make structural changes versus staying the course: a decision framework for major portfolio shifts
The course follows two fictional investors across a ten-year period — one navigating a job change, a market crash, and an inheritance; one approaching retirement with an over-concentrated portfolio — through the decisions and discipline challenges of sustained portfolio management. Each chapter pairs the investor scenario with readings, reflection prompts, and worksheets for applying the relevant management discipline to your own situation.
This course is designed for long-term investors who have managed an equity portfolio for at least a few years and want to develop a more rigorous ongoing management practice, as well as for financial advisors building structured client review processes. This course is informational and educational; it does not constitute investment, tax, or financial planning advice, and all major portfolio decisions should be reviewed with a qualified professional.
