About this course

Stepping out of your camera's automatic mode can feel intimidating, but understanding manual settings is the key to intentional photography. Whether you are using a traditional DSLR or a modern mirrorless system, the fundamental mathematical rules of light remain exactly the same. This course guides you through the core principles of exposure, teaching you how to balance aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to achieve your desired results. You will transition from letting the camera make decisions to intentionally configuring your equipment through foundational theory and practical written scenarios. What you'll learn: • Understand the exposure triangle and how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO interact. • Configure aperture settings to control depth of field and manage light intake. • Apply modern metering modes to evaluate scene brightness and calculate correct exposure. • Navigate the functional differences between traditional optical viewfinders and modern electronic sensors. • Practice adjusting camera configurations for various lighting conditions through guided written workflows. • Explore foundational concepts of sensor dynamic range and modern ISO handling. The curriculum begins with essential photography terminology and basic concepts of light capture before progressing into detailed, scenario-based exposure techniques. You will read through practical examples that explain exactly how to adjust your settings step-by-step for different environments. This course is designed specifically for absolute beginners with no prior photography experience, requiring only a camera with manual controls. Start reading today to unlock the full potential of your camera equipment and build a strong technical foundation.

I've had my DSLR for two years and never left auto mode until this course walked me through exposure step by step, wish there were a few more low-light examples though.

Finally the exposure triangle clicked for me, and I can dial in aperture for that creamy background blur.

Solid explanation of shutter speed and aperture with real camera examples, though the section on ISO felt a bit rushed.

I bought my first DSLR last year and it basically sat on auto mode collecting dust because manual settings felt like a foreign language. This course breaks down aperture and exposure in a way that actually clicked for me, using side-by-side photo comparisons instead of just theory. The pacing is comfortable enough that I never felt lost, and the practice shoots between lessons forced me to actually go outside and experiment with light. By the end I was shooting in full manual mode and understanding why my old photos always looked either blown out or too dark. It's changed how I think about taking pictures entirely.
