The communication strategies are the strongest part - really practical for defusing arguments before they blow up. The digital boundaries section is good but leans a bit general; with kids who are very tech-savvy you'll have to adapt it yourself. Still glad I took it.

Solid advice, though it's aimed more at early teens than the 17-18 crowd.
This gave me a plan for the years I was dreading. The emphasis on staying connected while still holding boundaries feels realistic, and I no longer feel like I'm losing my kid to a screen.
What stood out is that it treats teenagers like people you're trying to stay connected with, not problems to manage. The advice on picking your battles and not reacting to every eye-roll was exactly what I needed. There are realistic example conversations that show what to say and, just as usefully, what not to say. I've stopped taking the bait during arguments and things have genuinely cooled down at home.
Our dinner table is peaceful again.
Useful, if a little repetitive in places.
The bit about validating the feeling before addressing the behaviour sounded obvious but I clearly wasn't doing it. Once I started acknowledging how angry he was first, the shouting matches mostly stopped.
My 14 year old had basically stopped talking to us beyond grunts, and the sections on how to open a conversation without it feeling like an interrogation genuinely helped. Instead of firing questions the second she walks in, I've learned to give her space and she's started coming to me. The screen time chapters were useful too, especially framing it as an agreement rather than a rule I impose. It's not magic and we still argue, but the house feels less like a battleground.
I finally get that the moodiness isn't personal and there's actually a way to respond that doesn't escalate it. Learning to stay steady when my son snaps has changed our whole dynamic.
I'd tried the strict route and the lenient route and both backfired. Having a structured middle path built around communication and agreed limits made way more sense than the random advice I was finding online.
My daughter actually agreed to phone-free dinners after we used the negotiation approach from here.
Setting up a screen agreement together instead of just confiscating the phone has cut our evening fights in half.
