EMS Quality Improvement, Safety, and System Performance

Long-term improvement of EMS systems depends on disciplined attention to quality, safety, and performance measurement. This applied course teaches structured frameworks for that improvement work. By the end of this course you will be able to design EMS quality improvement initiatives, apply provider safety frameworks, measure system performance using standard metrics, and structure case reviews that produce actionable change. What you will learn: - Frameworks for clinical quality improvement including PDSA cycles applied to EMS - Provider safety frameworks including driving safety, infection control, and physical and mental health - System performance measurement including response times, clinical care indicators, and outcomes - Structured case review processes that focus on systems rather than individual blame - Approaches to integrating EMS data with hospital and public health data sources - The role of EMS in community health initiatives including community paramedicine - Documentation, reporting, and external review frameworks The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: a QI initiative design, a safety assessment, a performance metric plan, a case review template, an integration sketch, and a community paramedicine outline. This course is written for EMS supervisors, quality officers, agency leaders, and providers preparing to participate in system improvement. It does not replace formal EMS administration training or agency-specific policies. By the end you will have structured frameworks for engaging with EMS quality, safety, and performance work at the system level.
