Applied Physical Disability Parenting Across the Long Arc: Independence, Adolescence, and Adulthood Planning

Applied physical disability parenting unfolds across years and includes the long-term work of independence-building, adolescence, and adulthood planning. This applied course teaches that integration through case-based modules. By the end of this course you will be able to support independence across development, navigate adolescence with attention to autonomy, plan for transitions into adulthood, and sustain advocacy across systems. What you will learn: - Approaches to independence-building appropriate to development and ability - Approaches to adolescence including identity, social life, and autonomy - Approaches to transition planning into adulthood including healthcare and education - Approaches to handling specific situations including hospitalizations and equipment changes - Approaches to sustained advocacy including IEP and 504 cycles, healthcare, and community access - Approaches to community connections including peer families and disability community - Approaches to long-term planning including financial and legal considerations The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: an independence plan, an adolescence framework, a transition to adulthood plan, a specific situations response, a sustained advocacy plan, and a long-term planning reflection. This course is written for parents thinking across the long arc. By the end you will have moved from year-by-year coping to a sustained, long-arc approach that supports both your child's possibilities and your own life.
