The transition from learning biblical Hebrew or Greek grammar to actually reading and analyzing text with scholarly rigor is a significant step. It requires not just grammatical knowledge but the interpretive skills of exegesis — the capacity to read a passage in its linguistic, literary, and historical context and to engage with the tradition of scholarly interpretation that surrounds it. This course bridges that gap. By the end of this course you will be able to conduct a structured exegesis of a biblical passage using the original languages, engage with text-critical questions about manuscript variations, evaluate competing interpretations of key passages based on linguistic evidence, and sustain a long-term biblical language learning practice that deepens over years of use. What you will learn: - Exegetical method: the steps from initial observation of a passage to grammatical analysis, lexical study, contextual research, and theological synthesis - Text criticism basics: how to read a textual apparatus in the Nestle-Aland New Testament or the BHS Old Testament and evaluate the significance of variant readings - Working with Hebrew poetry: parallelism, meter, and the unique syntactic features that distinguish poetic texts from prose narrative - Advanced Greek syntax: participial constructions, conditional sentences, and the discourse markers that structure Pauline argument - Engaging secondary literature: how to read and evaluate journal articles and commentaries that argue from the original languages - Word study methodologies: the proper use and misuse of lexical evidence in theological argument — including the etymological fallacy - A long-term language maintenance plan: structured reading schedules, flashcard review systems, and the discipline of regular contact with original-language texts - Integrating language learning with devotional and academic practice: how advanced students of different traditions have described the experience of reading scripture in the original The course is structured around a series of extended exegetical case studies, comparative analysis exercises, and reflective essays on the practice of language learning in a theological context. You will work through complete short passages in both languages from initial reading to a finished interpretive essay. This course is written for students who have completed at least one year of formal or structured biblical language study and want to develop genuine exegetical capability.
