About this course

The story of Islamic civilization does not end with the fall of Baghdad. The centuries following the Mongol destruction saw a remarkable resilience — the rise of three major gunpowder empires, the continuation and transformation of Islamic intellectual life, and eventually the encounter with European colonial power that reshaped the entire Muslim world. Understanding that full arc is essential for making sense of contemporary Islamic politics, culture, and identity. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the major political structures of the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires and their distinct characters, analyze the effects of European colonialism on Muslim-majority societies and the intellectual responses it generated, trace the major currents of Islamic reform and revivalism that emerged in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and connect the historical developments of this period to contemporary political and religious dynamics. What you will learn: - The post-Mongol recovery: how new Islamic polities emerged in Anatolia, Persia, and India after the collapse of the Abbasid order - The Ottoman Empire: its institutional structures, legal pluralism, the millet system, and its complex relationship with the rest of the Islamic world - The Safavid Empire: the Shia character of Safavid Iran, the Sunni-Shia political divide as a structuring feature of early modern Islamic geopolitics - The Mughal Empire: its administrative innovations, the relationship between Islam and Hindu culture under Akbar, and the increasing rigidity under Aurangzeb - The colonial encounter: how European imperialism dismantled traditional Islamic political orders and the variety of responses — accommodation, resistance, reform - Islamic reform and revivalism: Wahhabism, the Deobandi movement, the Nahda (Arab renaissance), and modernist Islam — their origins, arguments, and lasting influence - The collapse of the Ottoman Caliphate (1924) and its political and theological significance in Muslim discourse - Contemporary consequences: how the political geography, institutional legacies, and intellectual currents of this period shape contemporary Muslim-majority societies and global Islamic politics The course is organized as a narrative with analytical frameworks embedded throughout. Case studies from different regions — Ottoman Anatolia, Mughal India, colonial Egypt — prevent the course from being dominated by any single regional experience. Reflection prompts ask you to connect historical patterns to contemporary situations. A synthesis worksheet guides you through a causal analysis of one dimension of the contemporary Muslim world using the historical material. This course is designed for learners with some background in Islamic history or world history who want to engage with the later and contemporary dimensions of the tradition. Suitable for students of history, political science, or Islamic studies. No prior specialist knowledge is assumed.
