About this course

Islamic practice is often described through its outward obligations — prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, almsgiving. But the Islamic scholarly tradition has always insisted that these outward forms are only as meaningful as the inner state that animates them. The science of the purification of the soul (Tazkiyah) addresses precisely this inner dimension: how the heart is prepared, purified, and oriented toward God. By the end of this course you will be able to explain the concept of Tazkiyah and its Quranic and prophetic basis, describe the concept of Ihsan as the inner dimension of faith and practice, explain how major vices (amrad al-qulub) are identified and addressed in the Islamic spiritual tradition, identify the major figures and texts in the history of Islamic spirituality, and understand how Tazkiyah relates to Sufi practice on one side and mainstream Islamic ethics on the other. What you will learn: - The Quranic foundation of Tazkiyah: key verses establishing the purification of the soul as a religious imperative and the Prophet's role in that purification - Ihsan: the third dimension of the Islamic path (after Islam and Iman) as described in the famous Hadith of Jibril — "to worship God as though you see Him" - The diseases of the heart (amrad al-qulub): pride (kibr), envy (hasad), miserliness (bukhl), and their remedies as described in al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din - Akhlaq: how Islamic character ethics (the virtues of truthfulness, patience, gratitude, generosity) are cultivated through deliberate practice according to the classical tradition - The relationship between Tazkiyah and Sufism: how Islamic spirituality developed into organized Sufi tariqat and where the tradition affirms and debates this development - Key figures in Islamic spirituality: al-Hasan al-Basri, al-Muhasibi, al-Qushayri, al-Ghazali — and the texts through which their teaching is transmitted - The concept of maqamat and ahwal: stages and states in the spiritual journey as mapped in classical Islamic spiritual literature - How Tazkiyah is taught and practiced in contemporary Islamic communities: halaqas, individual study, structured programs The course proceeds through a conceptual sequence: Quranic and prophetic basis, key concepts, vices and virtues, historical figures, and contemporary practice. Primary source excerpts in translation are included throughout. Reflection prompts ask for genuine self-examination as well as analytical engagement. This course is scholarly and educational in nature. This course is designed for learners new to Islamic spirituality as well as practicing Muslims seeking a deeper conceptual foundation for their inner life. No prior background in Islamic studies is required. All key Arabic terms are provided with transliteration and definition.
