Foundations of Parenting Children with Physical Disabilities

Parenting a child with a physical disability involves layered considerations across daily life, healthcare, education, and community. Sound practice rests on understanding the principles of accessibility, the role of independence-building, and the demands of advocacy. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the principles of accessibility at home and in the community, recognize the role of independence-building across development, identify the structure of medical and therapy teams, and understand the principles of educational advocacy. What you will learn: - The principles of home and community accessibility - The role of adaptive equipment including mobility, communication, and daily living aids - The principles of independence-building appropriate to age and ability - The structure of medical and therapy teams supporting children with physical disabilities - The role of educational supports including IEPs and 504 plans where relevant - The principles of advocacy across systems - The role of community connections including peer families and disability community The course uses readings, case examples, and reflection prompts. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for parents of children with physical disabilities at any stage. By the end you will have replaced isolated coping with a structured understanding of the systems and principles that support parenting in this context.
