Applied Play-Based Learning: Siblings, Special Needs, and Long-Term Engagement

Applied play-based learning adapts to siblings of different ages, children with special developmental needs, and the changing interests across early childhood. This applied course teaches that integration through case-based modules. By the end of this course you will be able to support sibling play across ages, adapt play approaches for children with special developmental needs, evolve play as interests change, and sustain a play culture across the early childhood years. What you will learn: - Approaches to sibling play including managing conflicts and supporting cooperation - Approaches to adapting play for sensory needs, communication differences, and developmental delays - Approaches to evolving play interests across early and middle childhood - Approaches to outdoor and unstructured play time - Approaches to coordinating play culture with caregivers and preschool teachers - Approaches to balancing screen time with rich play - Approaches to sustaining a play culture across years The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: a sibling play plan, an adapted play approach, an evolving interests plan, an outdoor and unstructured play approach, a caregiver coordination plan, and a long-term reflection. This course is written for parents thinking across the long arc of play in childhood. By the end you will have moved from one-off activities to a sustained play culture that supports your child's development across the early childhood years.
