Foundations of Mindful Communication

Mindful communication brings awareness to how we listen and speak. Sound practice rests on understanding presence, the components of skilled listening, and the principles of conscious speech. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the components of mindful communication, recognize common patterns that derail conversations, identify the principles of skilled listening, and understand the basics of nonviolent communication. What you will learn: - The role of presence and attention in communication - The components of skilled listening including reflection and clarification - The principles of conscious speech including timing, intention, and impact - The basics of nonviolent communication including observation, feeling, need, and request - Common patterns that derail conversations including reactivity, advice-giving, and hijacking - The role of body language and tone in communication - The difference between agreement, understanding, and validation The course uses readings, dialogue examples, and reflection prompts. Each module ends with applied exercises you can use in your own conversations. This course is written for adults who want their communication to reflect attention and care. By the end you will have replaced reactive communication patterns with a clearer understanding of the components of mindful communication and the practices that build them.
