About this course
The habits, relationships, and patterns established during paternity leave do not automatically persist when work resumes. Many fathers who were deeply involved during leave find that their caregiving role narrows quickly once they return to the workplace, partly from necessity and partly from the gravitational pull of familiar gender patterns. Sustaining meaningful involvement requires deliberate attention beyond the leave period itself.
By the end of this course you will be able to identify the transition points at which paternal involvement tends to erode in the first year, develop a post-leave co-parenting framework that distributes responsibility sustainably, and articulate the specific practices that keep fathers actively involved as work demands resume.
What you will learn:
- How paternal involvement typically evolves across the newborn, four-month, and eight-to-twelve-month phases, and what drives the erosion in some families versus the deepening in others
- How to structure the post-leave period so that the shift back to work does not default to a primary-caregiver/backup-caregiver dynamic unless that is genuinely your shared choice
- How to maintain the relationship with your infant during high-work-demand periods: which caregiving moments most build attachment and which can be handed off without relational cost
- How to recognize and address caregiver burnout in your partner before it becomes a crisis, and how to share that load rather than observe it
- How to navigate the workplace culture pressures — around availability, long hours, and performance visibility — that work against involved fatherhood
- How to have ongoing co-parenting conversations with your partner as needs and roles shift, rather than operating on an arrangement set in the first weeks
- How fathers describe the evolution of their involvement across the first year, including what they wish they had done differently when leave ended
- How to plan for future leaves — for a second child or a partner's medical need — with a more informed and intentional framework
The course is organized around three post-leave phases: the first month back at work, months two through six, and months seven through twelve. Each phase is developed through case studies, annotated frameworks for co-parenting conversations, and reflection exercises that ask you to evaluate your current patterns and identify where adjustment would be most valuable. A closing exercise asks you to write a one-page co-parenting commitment for the second half of your baby's first year.
This course is designed for fathers and non-birthing partners who are returning from or planning paternity leave and want to sustain meaningful involvement through the first year and beyond. It is suitable for those returning to work for the first time after a leave and for those who want to course-correct after a period of diminished involvement. No prior background in family psychology or organizational behavior is required.
